Civil Cases

A civil case refers to a legal dispute between two or more parties in which one party sues the other for a specific remedy, such as money damages, an injunction, or a declaration of rights. These cases are typically handled by the civil court system and do not result in criminal penalties such as imprisonment. Civil cases can include a wide range of disputes, from contract disputes and property disputes to personal injury and medical malpractice cases.

The legal process for a civil case typically includes the filing of a complaint, the service of a summons, the filing of an answer, and discovery. The burden of proof for civil cases is “preponderance of the evidence” which means that it is more likely than not that the allegations are true. Civil court proceedings are usually less formal than criminal proceedings and the parties involved may represent themselves or hire a lawyer to represent them.
